Parent Coordination
“Following
divorce children should not be caught up in ongoing parental conflict.
A Parent Coordinator can help parents establish and maintain appropriate
focus on the needs of their children.” Dr. John E. Northman
Parent Coordination is a
child-focused dispute resolution process that assists high-conflict
parents (parents who continue to have serious conflicts following
divorce) in implementing workable and effective parenting plans.
Most significantly, ongoing
post-divorce conflict between parents is the single biggest predictor of
poor outcomes for children of divorce.
High-conflict divorced
parents frequently turn to the courts to manage their communications and
conflicts. The courts were never really designed for that purpose.
Dr. Northman has expertise in
divorce, families, children, custody, and parenting issues. He has had
extensive practical experience working with high-conflict and litigating
parents. As a trained Parent Coordinator he can help parents
- Identify and focus on
the needs of their children
- Implement a parenting
plan
- Minimize chronic
conflict
- Protect their children
from the impact of conflict
- Reduce litigation
- Improve communication
- Make effective decisions
- Facilitate resolution of
disputes in a timely manner.
Depending upon particular
circumstances, Dr. Northman as Parent Coordinator may
- Meet with parents
individually or together
- Talk with the children
- Talk with relevant
collaterals (other significant people in the children’s lives)
- Communicate via
telephone or e-mail.
