Collaborative Divorce
“If they put
their minds to it, people who once decided to cooperate in marriage
should be able to collaborate in divorce.” Dr. John E. Northman
Collaborative
Divorce offers a mutually respectful, solutions-oriented process based
on three principles:
- A pledge to resolve
issues outside of court
- An honest exchange of
information by both spouses
- A solution that takes
into account the priorities of both spouses and their children
In working toward a divorce
agreement, situations may arise where the involvement of a psychologist
can be extremely helpful.
Psychologist as Child
Specialist: Children may suffer most from divorce and be least able to
understand or express their feelings. The goal of Collaborative Divorce
is to make children a priority, not a casualty. Dr. Northman, as Child
Specialist, assists the Collaborative Divorce process as a neutral third
party who comes to understand the children and then communicates their
feelings, concerns, hopes and fears to the parents and their attorneys.
He can then work most effectively with parents and attorneys in planning
for the children’s lives.
Psychologist as Divorce
Coach: Divorce is a major life transition. While it marks the end of
one part of life, it is also the beginning of another. Dr. Northman, as
Divorce Coach, provides a divorcing spouse with a safety net for this
challenging transition and helps focus on creating a fulfilling life
after divorce. He makes particular note of strengths so that the
individual can best handle the divorce process itself and begin to take
positive steps toward a new life.
With his strong professional
background in child psychology, human growth and development across the
life cycle, and family systems, Dr. Northman can bring his expertise and
experience to help parents and attorneys work toward successful
resolution of the divorce process.
